Things We Learned The Hard Way

Things We Learned The Hard Way:
Edition One.
(of many, many more to come.)

1. Madrid, although the party capital of the world, does not indulge in such partying on Sundays. Do not get all dressed up in your cutest outifts, call it a "girl's night", and go out only to find that every club is already closed and wander the streets at 1:30am.

2. When the sign for the Metro says it closes at 2:00am... it means that it closes at 2:00a.m. Which translates to The Train Stops Running So If You Want To Get Home You Better Get Here Before Then. If you don't, you will sit in the empty metro station until the construction workers finally ask you what the hell you're doing, and in a kind, fatherly way, scold you on your stupidity, ask if you are homeless and trying to spend the night in the Metro, laugh at your terrible Spanish, then kick you out.

3. (This sortof goes with the above. It would've helped anyway.) Bring some form of time-telling device. This will aid in determining whether the Metro is closed or not. Diving watches are not sexy. But they are efficient and a much better option than having to walk home from the Metro station because you didn't know what time it was. Your feet will hurt. And perhaps you will fall on the slippery steps and your knee will start bleeding and you'll feel like even more of an idiot because now you are lost, homeless, and now bleeding. (Except its mostly hilarious.)

4. (This one is for you, Mom.) You are in Europe. This means that you do not have GPS system, you do not have an iPhone with a map, and you do not have any sort of electronic device that actually works here. This also means, when you have the opportunity to look things up on the Internet and Google Maps -- DO IT. Look for cross-streets and points-of-reference. Because, guaranteed, the moment you get off the Metro station, you will already be lost, and continue to be lost, for at least an hour.
