First Day In Madrid

Hey everyone!

Okay I probably won't be updating as much as this all the time, but I woke up early and have nothing to do. (Haha I'm sitting on the bathroom floor with my computer so I don't wake anybody else up with the noise of my typing! We get WiFi in our hotel for free, which is BALLER.) So, our first day in Madrid!

After I posted yesterday, Lauren got a message from her boyfriend Trevor that he was on a train headed towards Madrid to surprise her! He's currently studying abroad in Sevilla, and since he knew we were going to be here, he just hopped on a train, hoping that she would call him back because he had no idea where we would be! Very romantic. So she was super excited, of course. And I adore Trevor, so I was excited to see him too!

Trevor and Lauren -- Aren't they cute??

We took our first Metro adventure, charting out how to get to him on the Metro map and everything. We decided to meet him at the Puerta de Sol, which is one of the biggest meeting plazas in Madrid. It was really funny, because Lauren kept pulling out her map to look, and Trevor and I kept telling her to "put it away! We'll look like tourists!" -- except our English clearly told everyone that we were! We tried to not be annoying, loud American tourists...though, I'm not sure how successful we were! Hahah

The Puerta de Sol is BEAUTIFUL. There's a huge statue of this man in a chariot, which I guess is one of the most historical statues in Madrid and tons of people! We walked around a lot and finally settled down at this restaurant down one of the avenues. Oh no, our first experience having to order in Spanish! Luckily, we had Trevor, who has been in Spain for 3 weeks and already knows a lot of the customs. (Lauren and I were so happy he was there, because we said we probably would've ended up at McDonalds. Whenever somebody speaks to us in Spanish, we sortof just blink at them!) However, we ordered! We even got a huge pitcher of Sangria! (Which we didn't know what we were ordering. Somebody else had a pitcher of it on their table, and we thought it looked pretty yummy, so we just pointed and said, "Queremos este." LOL.)

Our first pitcher of Sangria! (That we ordered LEGALLY!) Yummm.

We all picked something different off the menu to eat, too.

Here's me! I ordered an empanada and, guess what?
IT WAS REALLY YUMMY. Maybe I won't starve here?

This is what Trevor ordered. A chorizo sandwich. (I forget the actual name.)

Lauren and her ensalada!

We made friends with our server, who taught us different names for things. Meanwhile, we taught him some English words! (We told him about Diet Coke being amazing. Did you know that here, all the sodas are served in bottles? Like in the 50s or something. Its neat.) After that, we just explored and walked all around that area. We walked super far actually.

Here are some pictures of us exploring.

We couldn't figure out what this building was? But its super pretty.

Lauren and Trevor looking adorable.

Hahahah -- we went inside just for the experience. Then promptly turned around and ran out!
It was funny though, so we took a picture. Also, there were super skanky girls standing around outside that we think were hookers?
We stuck to the mainstream stuff after that, hahahaha.

After that, we took the Metro back to the hotel... we had good intentions of just taking naps and then waking up to go to a discoteca, but the moment our heads touched the pillows, we crashed (in all our clothes!) and didn't wake up until this morning!

Anyways, while I've been writing this, Lauren and Trevor woke up and we're all munching on my trail mix and Chewy bars (told you they'd come in handy!) but we should probably go venture out for some breakfast soon. Our second Spanish meal! Today, we're going sightseeting -- exploring the Museo de Prado (one of the biggest in the WORLD!) and maybe the Palacio de Real, which is GORGEOUS. Keep you updated!

Love love & mucho amor!

  4. Hi sweetie wow you are there and it looks beautiful. For some reason I didn't think you would be writing already. All your cousins are camping at Camanche even Nick, Uncle Don and I are pulling things together for our cruise to the Bahamas. I heard your brother won his game on Friday. I visited with pebbles last night since no one would be home. Her and Molly just love running around together. By the way your photos are amazing I am really enjoying viewing them and reading about your experiences. Take care, love and kisses Auntie Bonnie

  5. Good morning Kandace its 9:30 AM Sunday morning in boring San Jose, CA. Nothing too new to report I checked in on Kevin last night he is doing fine he had just ordered a pizza to be delivered. He had to be back at school at 7:30AM on Saturday for weight lifting. Pretty hard after having a late Friday night game in Stockton. Since they won big time I'm sure the ride home in the bus was a fun one. Hope you have internet access in Alicante its cool to get up and read your blog. I can't access your blog at work since all blogs are blocked so I'll try to keep up when I'm home. Okay love and kisses Auntie Bonnie.
